EZ-Back
SyQuest/Floptical Backup
© 1993 Larry D. Duke
for
Purple Mountain Computers, Inc.
This program may not be bundled with any Floptical drives other than the
Purple Mountain Computer Freedom Floptical Drive™.
EZ-Back is an imcremental backup utility for the ATARI ST/STe/TT and
probably the Falcon (though I haven't been able to verify this). It
is easy to use, fast, and has some features you won't find on other
backup utility programs.
Let's start with the basics. The minimum system requirement for this
program is:
ATARI computer (ST,STe,TT, etc)
Color or Monochrome Monitor
At least 1 MB of memory (a smaller version that does not
require this much memory is
available, though somewhat slower)
What the program does:
It backs up your hard drive partitions to a SyQuest™ drive, a
Freedom Floptical Drive™, or any other hard drive partition you
have on your system, using an incremental backup scheme. In
other words, it only backs up those files which are new or have
changed in date, size, or file attributes since your last backup.
This allows successive backups to be done more quickly.
It ALSO checks your "C" drive to see if you have enabled/disabled
any of your Desk Accessories or AUTO programs since your last
backup of this partition, and renames the destination to the
appropriate ACX/ACC or PRX/PRG extension. This keeps you from
having duplicate files that you can't turn off!
When files are copied, the original file date, file time, and
file attributes are copied with them. This even works for WRITE
PROTECTED files. If there is a change in a WRITE PROTECTED file,
the OLD file is overwritten.
Program Information:
The program itself is relatively self explanatory. When you
first run it, you will see the copyright and program information.
Immediately following, you get a dialog box asking which is your
SyQuest or Floptical drive. Just clicking on one of the drive
letters will set your destination. If you make a mistake, don't
worry. On the main menu, you can again select the Syquest or
Floptical drive letter.
The main menu has only four possibilities: Backup, Restore,
Set Syquest, and Exit. Selecting anything except Exit will give
you the dialog box that asks which drive(s) you want to backup or
restore. Select one or more drives to backup/restore. The rest
is automatic.
Suggestions:
It's best to have your SyQuest disk partitioned as a single
drive. That way, numerous partitions may be added to the
SyQuest. Each partition is written to the destination in a
directory (folder) named after the letter of the partition. The
"C" drive will be in the "C" folder of the SyQuest. By doing
that, you can back up any number of partitions (limited only by
the available space on the destination drive) to a single disk.
The program will work equally well with the 44MB or the 88MB
version of the removable media drive.
If you are working on a 1MB computer, you may want to disable all
of the desk accessories and AUTO programs to free up memory. It
IS suggested that you keep the RAINBOW Utilities and FOLDRxxx.PRG
(unless you are using the ICD utilities) to avoid the dreaded
40-folder limit. EZ-Back works well with all AUTO programs and
desk accessories tested.
Questions?:
I've tried to make this program as easy to use as possible. If
you have any problems with the program, please let me know.
The only problems encounterred so far have been from bad
directories or FAT tables. Clearing up problems like this is
beyond the scope of this program, however I can suggest
DIAMOND EDGE from Oregon Technologies, CLEANUP from ICD, and
HARD DISK SENTRY from Beckemeyer Development to remedy these
problems.
